Enclosed Ecosystem Shrimp Ecosphere (houses 2-3 shrimp)
Care Instruction
• IMPORTANT (maturation period): your system is only about 2-3 weeks old! With any FULLY closed off systems, it will need more time to mature. A fully enclosed SHRIMP ecosystem this small requires just right amount of light (system often fail prematurely because of lack of light. Algae won’t be able to photosynthesize resulting in oxygen deprivation). Lighting for algae and getting an established colony of beneficial bacteria is the key. If you don’t want to risk your shrimp dying prematurely, please follow these instructions. I highly recommended switching out the gold cork and using the wood cork for 1-2 months (maturation period). I’ve drilled a small hole allowing some air to exchange while you figure out a good spot for your system. The key is to find bright indirect sunlight for 10-12 hours daily. Top off evaporated water once a month with distill water during maturation period (should be about 70% water, 30% air). After 2-3 months, you should see green/brown algae forming on the seashells and glass. This is a sign that your system is established and matured. Swap back to the gold cork for a fully enclosed system, at this point there is no need to top off water since the system is fully sealed.
• You can also skip maturation period but there is a higher chance something will fail due to lack of or too much light, bacteria outbreak, temperature fluctuation causing a chain reaction and eventually your shrimp will die prematurely.
• Location: keep it indoors at room temperature between 62-80 degrees F. You may leave in direct sunlight but there is a chance it might get too hot. I recommend bright indirect sunlight. Caution: leaving it near windows (temperature fluctuation), on top of fireplace, or heater vent (too hot).
• Use corrosion resistance magnet cleaner to clean algae or move stuff around if needed. Magnet can be picked up again if dropped to the bottom.
• Do not add other fish or decorations such as resin base product. Introducing new elements to enclosed systems could introduce toxic chemicals or unwanted bacteria. An outbreak might kill beneficial bacteria, shrimp or algae in the system.
• 10-12 hours of bright indirect sunlight daily.
• Feeding: Feeding is optional but not necessary, I personally recommend feeding once every 2/3 weeks for humane reasons. It’s also okay if you want to switch to fully enclosed and never open or feed them. These shrimps can survive from eating bacteria and algae, but they won’t get very big. Feeding will help your shrimp grow faster, help with molding process and color of the shrimp. Over feeding will throw off the ecosystem. Use one small flake of fish food I provided. 1 small flake (2mmx2mm) is enough for 2 weeks.
• Your shrimp might reproduce after 1-2 years. You can move them to a bigger bottle/small tank and start your colony.
